L.R.D. Mendis 111 v EnglandBack to boards

Duleep Mendis made a historic century at Lord’s during the summer of 1984 to claim a spot on the Honours Boards.

Captaining Sri Lanka in their first-ever match at the Home of Cricket, Mendis initially watched team-mate Sidath Wettimuny score his side’s first hundred at Lord’s, before his opportunity at the crease came with the score at 292-4.

Mendis followed the work by Wettimuny by adding 111 off 143 balls, scoring eleven fours and three sixes in a sublime innings to guide Sri Lanka to a score of 491/7 declared.

However, some good resistance from England prevented Sri Lanka from victory as the match was eventually drawn after five days at Lord’s.
