MCC Women first played on the Main Ground in 2014, when a squad faced a Rest of the World XI as part of the Club’s bicentenary celebrations, as well as an MCC regional match held in the same year. In 2018, MCC Women’s Day saw Middlesex Women playing on the Main Ground for the first time in their club’s history.
In 2019, Middlesex faced Surrey in the London Cup, but plans in 2020 had to be put on hold due to Covid-19. In 2021, two MCC teams – comprised of women’s players from across the country and named MCC Red and MCC Yellow for the purposes of the event – played the 100-ball format for the first time at Lord’s, ahead of the inaugural Hundred tournament.
Last year saw MCC Yellow defeat MCC Red, before Middlesex Women beat MCC Women by seven wickets. In the final game of the day, Naomi Dattani struck an unbeaten century for Sunrisers as they comfortably defeated an MCC Invitational XI.
This time around, two sets of MCC Playing Members will once again face each other under the guises of MCC Red and MCC Yellow in a T20 match, before the London Cup returns to Lord’s for the first time in four years.
Since the inception of the London Cup in 2015, Middlesex have won six titles to Surrey’s two, but the hosts will be eager to avenge a nine-wicket defeat at the Kia Oval last year.
